Drainage Systems

Poor storm water drainage in Del Mar Woods has been a drag on its reputation as a place to live. Never mind the country like environment, the narrow tree lined streets, the friendly atmosphere, and dozens of other great attributes, the drainage problem has been its public relations archilles heel.

But recent years have seen a direct onslaught on this problem. Included remedies have included dry wells, connections to the storm water drainage system on Half Day Road, a storm water drainage ditch along the western and northern perimeters, and a 48” cement tile installed to carry excess waters from the ditch to the nearby West Fork of the North Branch of the Chicago River.

Although Del Mar residents constantly remove debris from the ditch as well as openings to drains throughout “The Woods,” the prime mover of storm water, the 48” cement tiles, deteriorated over the years and actually collapsed in several places. Recent actions by the Lake County Board brought about the replacement of these tiles and “The Woods” can look forward to a much dryer environment!

But this wasn’t to be just any old replacement project. Instead, it was tied into the excavation of a massive, 20+ acre settling/retention pond, a reason for those two mysterious roads heading north off Half Day Road across from the Slough.
