Our Governmental Structure

Residents in Del Mar Woods all have different reasons for living in an unincorporated area. Some like the lack of government interference, others like the lassie faire atmosphere, others the country like feeling, and still others like the lower than usual taxes.

But there’s always someone trying to impose their vision on others... especially when their vision involves dominance over others. And yes, we have our control freaks. So in order to understand where authority fits into the Del Mar Woods structure, we will attempt to make some sense of our governmental structure.

Del Mar Woods falls under the jurisdiction of the Lake County Government and no one else... period!

Del Mar Woods does NOT fall under the jurisdiction of the West Deerfield Township or the DMW Improvement Association. Our representative on the Lake County Board is Carol Spielman.

The Lake County Government has various departments to service unincorporated areas. These include the Sheriff’s Department, Health Department, Building & Zoning, and others. Their phone numbers are located HERE.

So how does West Deerfield Township (WDT) fit into the equation? WDT is responsible for the maintenance of our roads as well as items which may impact the roads. Since this also includes insuring the roads are passable, their responsibility extends to road drainage, shoulder maintenance, and damage control.

The Del Mar Woods Improvement Association (DMWIA) is simply a lobbying body which was formed years ago by a group of residents intent on mitigating the flooding problems in DMW. Since that time, the DMWIA has ventured into other areas of concern, some successful, others not. There are no underlying assets for the organization such as you would have with condo association, and the DMWIA has NO legal standing other than being incorporated in much the same manner as a sporting club or similar group.
