Whether it’s by design or a result of mandates made by the eventual Half Day Road expansion project in 2007, the “backbone” for a new water main has been installed on the north side of Half Day Road from one end of Del Mar Woods to the other.

The “backbone,” along with three fire hydrants, was installed by the IHC Group out of Elgin, Illinois and travels the width of Half Day Road from Wildwood to Birchwood.TheCrewCropped350g03

Although most of this “photovoyageur” covers work performed on Half Day Road, most will also apply to the upcoming water main transition in the interior of Del Mar Woods.

Our photos highlight  key stages of the installation. To view more detailed photos of a particular stage, simply click on a photo or the supplied link.

Old Water Line Marker350j03

It all began innocently enough... a dig here, a dig there, and markers suddenly appeared over the location of existing Del Mar Woods water lines. To see more, click HERE

Then overnight, marking sticks with small blue flags appeared up and down Half Day Road. Hmmm... what were these things? For more information on what they mean, click HERE

This is the machine and the operator responsible for tunneling 1026’, at exactly six feet deep, from 50’ west of Birchwood to approximately 100’ east of Wildwood. How they do this is a facinating story in itself. To learn a few of the tricks, click on the picture or HERE

Towards1280-300g

Here you can see the drill bit shooting underground towards 1280 HDR for installation of a new fire hydrant.

Once the small drill bit reached 1280 HDR, a larger head was attached and pulled back through with a length of 9” pipe attached to it. This is what remained at 1280 after the pull was finished. Once a 90 degree elbow was attached to this end, a connecting section was installed to bring the pipe up to the surface for connection to a new fire hydrant.
