Half Day road construction has once again resumed between Ridge Road (north) and Waukegan Road. And it appears the project’s scope has widened.

Previously, we were under the impression the project was all about the bridge… period. But that’s not to be the case. As we mentioned in previous bulletins, the newly constructed bridge represented about 1/3 of its planned width. The new ribbon of highway on both sides of the new bridge was a prelude to removal of the old bridge and completion of the remaining 2/3rds. It was our understanding replacement roads on both sides of this remaining 2/3rds wouldn’t be constructed until 2007.

Apparently we were wrong… or the project’s scope has been changed. On September 24, 2005, the IDOT Project Manager informed DMWupdate.com that construction has resumed and will include completion of the other 2/3rds of the bridge along with the removal and replacement of the old road on both sides of the bridge.

Additionally, a new 36 inch drainage tile is being installed on the north side of the replacement road between the bridge and Ridge Road (north). Storm water sewers installed on the south side of the road poured last year, will connect to these new tiles as will additional storm water sewers to be installed along the north side of the replacement road.

On the west side of the bridge, new storm water sewers on the north side of the replacement road will be connected to a previously installed, capped off feeder tile running under that portion of the road constructed last year. The capped off feeder tiles lead to new 6 foot drainage tiles, also installed last year. The 6 foot drainage tiles in turn, lead to a new combination settling/retention pond north of Half Day Road (see The mysterious Pond). Whew… did you catch all of that?

Of special interest to residents of Del Mar Woods are three additional storm water sewers (one was installed last year) to be installed between Wildwood and Birchwood.

Finally, after all storm sewers and tiles have been installed and connected across the highway to the main, 6 foot drainage tile, that portion of the highway fronting Del Mar Woods and Bannockburn Green will be stripped to the concrete and resurfaced.

Barring unforeseen circumstances, the project should be completed by December 17, 2005.
